Police arrested 17 people on charges of driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Jan. 18 and Sunday. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes; one was younger than age 21.

Police arrested 17 people on charges of driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Jan. 18 and Sunday. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes; one was younger than age 21.

Kona officers arrested seven motorists while Puna officers arrested six and South Hilo officers three. One driver was arrested in the South Kohala district.

There have been 71 DUI arrests so far this year compared with 67 during the same period last year, an increase of 6 percent, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

The number of major accidents in that time period also climbed, with 85 so far this year compared with 72 during the same period last year, an increase of 18.1 percent.

So far this year, there have been no fatalities on Big Island public roadways compared with one during the same period last year.
